Wow! What a wonderful year and spring event! It’s hard to believe our 6th year is almost behind us. We received so much good feedback from the event attendees. Thank you all for everything you’ve done to make this year great for all the students and families. We feel really blessed! Family Day is our last Wonder Generations day and the Homeschool Days Fair is the last Wonder Honor Society event. We’re almost at the finish line!

Students preregistered for a beginning instrument class, band, or orchestra MUST complete an online Preliminary Music Evaluation to determine whether an in-person audition or evaluation is required. ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOMESCHOOL CONFERENCE (RMHC)

Wonder will have a booth at this year’s RMHC. If you’re attending the conference, please stop by and say hello! We also need volunteers to assist in the booth. If you’re interested in volunteering, please comment on this memo with your dates and times of availability. We will let you know if and when you are needed based on your submitted availability. It was through meeting an instructor/coach through this event that our family was introduced to and joined our orchestra and began taking private instruction.

Firstly, let us say, we greatly appreciate the work you’ve done with our Wonder students. The improvements they’ve made as individuals and as an ensemble are very apparent. The positive work you’ve done with each group was shown during the rehearsal performances we witnessed.

Thanks to all who attended the dress rehearsals! Even with the last-minute location change, the entire day is running more smoothly every year, we ended on-time, and covered most of everything we needed.

There were a few questions we received from families and the team during recently, but for the most part, we’ve not received many questions or feedback about the upcoming event details so we’ll assume it’s pretty clear to most of you. We did need to make some changes from last month’s memo and after the rehearsal, so please take note. If we’ve missed anything or if you have any questions, please let us know. We may make slight adjustments over the next few days.

We’ll be doing a final review later tonight of the Rundown linked below to make sure we didn’t miss anything so if you see any mistakes, please let us know.

YEAR OF WONDER (TO ACCOMPANIST AND ENSEMBLE CONDUCTORS ONLY)

• Please view the Spring Events Announcement and Rundown tab for this event. Please DO NOT print it as changes may be made before the event.  [RUNDOWN LINK]
• Arrival Time: See the rundown for your ensemble’s arrival time and follow the listed times.
• Although the students would love to see you at the event, coaches can, but are not required to, attend the Year of Wonder. Only the ensemble conductor and accompanists are required to attend or if we are expecting you to fill-in as a player.
• Please be sure to be in professional concert attire (Concert Black for the accompanist; also appropriate for conductors, but feel free to add a colored accent piece if desired)
• Please plan to arrive in enough time to begin promptly (percussion students will come early to helping initial setup, but staff does not need to be there at that time)
• While your ensemble is waiting to take the stage, you will have an opportunity to run through music outside of the sanctuary until you are called to enter, if desired. Once off stage and in the hallway, you can dismiss students to their next ensemble or to sit quietly in the sanctuary (an event HH should be available to help you). After the Group Photo (which we didn’t get to take during the dress rehearsals), students will have time to relax.
• We will need you to monitor students in or outside of the sanctuary when you are not on stage.
• You are dismissed to leave after your final ensemble stage time is completed, or if you have more than an hour between your listed times and your concert time, you are free to leave and come back (please let us know if you plan to leave).

FAMILY DAY (UPDATES)

• We are still working on updating the Family Day schedule.

Music Foundations students should also have their mastered level noted.

The finish line is approaching and it’s coming fast. You all have really done wonders with this year’s group of students.

Thank you for those who helped as volunteers during the Wonder Games and donated to the Wonder Games fundraiser. You blessed the families and made it a wonderful night. Thank you all for everything you’ve done to teach and inspire your students. We’re experiencing another year of people being out because of sickness and we know it’s been unexpectedly challenging to get students to practice consistently. But the Prelude Orchestra students will soon play together for the first time soon and they were making music together in their sectionals! The choirs sound beautiful, the recorder players can’t stop playing, the students are understanding the foundations of music theory and are excited about art and dance, and the littles love their teachers, Miss Ro, Miss Meg, and Miss Leslie.

This is a long memo, best viewed on a computer, because it includes a rough, tentative outline for the important upcoming dates (spreadsheet coming). Please reference this memo while you’re planning. MODIFIED SCHEDULES

We are planning for the few modified schedule days as we get closer to the end-of-year events so the instrument ensembles, choirs, and dance groups can practice together before the dress rehearsal. The Group Photo day and Dress Rehearsal are the days we’ve alloted for this. We will update this as titles are submitted from the main concert for Family Day repertoire. We’ve included a tentative schedule and rehearsal stage order for planning purposes. An updated rundown will be available in digital and print form for each event.

• April 14 GROUP CLASS PHOTO: We will call classes out close to the beginning or end of class. This will also be the best day to combine ensembles students in different blocks (recorder, choir, dance)
  • Attire: Attire (according to the Wonder Way): Wonder Tee
• April 28 SPRING DRESS REHEARSAL: Daytime
  • Photos will be taken for the yearbook, so please be in concert attire
  • Attire: Concert Attire (according to the Wonder Way): Concert Black is appropriate. Students will be in their concert attire as well.
  • ASL Choir, Music Foundations, Art Classes, and non-ensembles: Students will be pulled from classes to attend their ensemble dress rehearsal. 
  • Art Classes: Please plan to work on installations and final details for the display. Students may enter late or need to leave earlier.
  • Dress Rehearsal Schedule
    • Stands: Students DO NOT need to bring their stands to the sanctuary
    • Off-stage: If you are not on stage, rehearse in your room until called
    • Concert Mindset: Students should be prepared for Concert mindset as soon as the doors open (no speaking, instruments in rest position, remain attentive)
    • Next On-Stage Stage Order: When called, Next group will line up outside the sanctuary on the north side in stage order
    • Next On-Stage Stage Order: Then enter the sanctuary and stand in the back of the sanctuary in reverse stage order
    • Musicians will enter stage by row (stage right, first row first, instruments in rest position); conductor will be introduced and follow after musicians are staged
    • Conductors cue playing position, students will bow together at the end of set (not each piece) when conductor moves to stage right (take your time for photographer – ensemble photo will be taken with instruments before exiting stage during dress rehearsal)
    • Exit stage right, conductor first, musicians follow
    • Go back to the rehearsal room so students are near for Group Concert Photo
    • Video recording will occur throughout each dress rehearsal for time and formation reference
    • All classes start in regular rooms so their bags and stands do not need to be brought to the sanctuary.

Wow! If we counted correctly, we have 8 more weeks of Wonder for this season. These next weeks are likely to zoom by. Now is the time we’ll all want to focus our attention on the small details — getting repertoire polished and performance-ready, really identifying honorable qualities in our students for year-end recognitions, and giving feedback that will help us make the best tweaks for next year.   • Class 2 and 1 Bands, orchestras, choirs and drumlines shall be limited to not more than 20 minutes for performance. Clinicians will spend up to 20 minutes with ensemble following performance. Musicians must clear stage within 5 minutes after clinician is finished.
  • Choirs shall be limited to not more than 20 minutes, including performance, clinician segment, and entering and clearing the stage.

We’ve completed our fall semester of Wonder! Thank you to all who attended or will attend a one-on-one (if we already scheduled one with you) and for the work you’ve done in creating an enjoyable environment for our students and families to learn and share music and arts. Let us start off by saying how grateful we are for each of you. We took time during break to speak with Wonder HSD families (particularly those with students in an ensemble), and we continually heard how Wonder is the favorite day of the week for their children. Thank you for participating in this week’s spirit day and for submitting team points. The students are getting more excited to contribute to Wonder in positive ways. We’ve had several students share what they did for someone else, which shows they are thinking about their actions (very cute since they don’t get points for noticing their own deeds). Students are also sharing about what they’ve witnessed (for example: “red opened the door for someone,” or “yellow helped a student find their bag, etc…). Even practice times are better for some students (we hope this is translating to learning their skills).

We did it!

What a WONDER-full first day! Thank you for giving all our Wonder students a good time. We’re thankful our children get to experience the joys that come from music and the arts alongside you and other homeschoolers. Many students have already declared Wonder Homeschool Day one of their favorite days of the week and can’t wait for next class! Already, you’ve inspired them to learn more about art and music and to share all they’re learning! We appreciate your efforts and look forward to seeing the fruit develop over the course of the year. As we’ll share with the families, we heard music playing, voices singing, and a lot of chatter with new friends. We also saw bright smiles, artistic creations in the making, and plenty of preparations in motion for what’s ahead this season. We also experienced some challenges, which are expected on the first day of a program our size. Thank you for your initial feedback. We’ll be working to smooth out any bumps and make the necessary adjustments until we get into the right rhythm for this year. Thank you all for making it a great day of exploring, sharing, and creating!

Please note: Wonder’s admin team will be out on Thursday of this week. We’ll be sure to check our email during our two-week break to answer any questions we receive, so don’t hesitate to reach out. Also, for new families who may not know, Wonder’s blackout dates for breaks include days we cannot use CCPC facilities and the Biblical festival calendar. In past years, we’ve had one or no days off for the Feast of Tabernacles, but this year the first and last day of Tabernacles are both on a Tuesday, so we have a rare two weeks off. We hope you all enjoy the time off with your families, and remember to practice during break! Blessings!

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

• Read the Memos: Please be sure to read the memos (staff and family so you know what families hear) and complete the Action Items below, if applicable. We do not send out many staff memos during year and we want to respect everyone’s time, but we do need to make sure communication is effective and efficient so we’re all on the same page.
• Attendance: Please be on-time and use the Attendance line if you will be absent or tardy AND update the roadmap. Please give us notice of absences as early as possible. All planned absences should already be submitted.
• Arrival: Please arrive in enough time to set up your room and be ready to greet and direct your students upon their arrival.
• Time Management: You will need to keep track of your class time and ensure you wrap up activities on-time. Please make sure you put the room back if you moved or brought in chairs or tables.
• Printing: Please bring a single copy of anything you’d like printed. Sometimes the wifi doesn’t stay connected, so we have delays in printing. Please still add a digital copy of any printed resources to your respective prep folder with your lesson.
• Class Notes: In our experience and from family feedback, bullet-pointed notes are the preferred format (rather than full sentences). Please keep this in mind when writing your Class Notes.
• Student Points: Within the Black Class Folders you will find an attendance sheet, Team Points sheet, a schedule, some classroom policy details, and other applicable items. Please be intentional about noticing good character and awarding points to student teams.
• Assembly Sharing: Most performance ensembles will have the opportunity to share music during Assembly. Please prepare ONE 2-3 minute piece per ensemble to perform during the 1pm Assembly dated below in the Importnat Upcoming Dates section (dates will be posted in future memo).
• Final Registration: For those of you who have a child in the program, please be prepared to resolve any outstanding balances by week 3. We’ll do our best to get your final registration to you by next week. If you have any questions, please reply to this memo as soon as possible.
• Fall Reviews for (Band, Orchestra, Recorder Only – Music Foundations as needed):
  • During Fall Break we schedule Fall Conference Reviews for instrument students. The meetings are with the Director and families, so you are not required to attend. During this meeting, we discuss the students progress on their instrument and want to communicate both the strength and weakness of each student. It’s especially important we stay ahead of each student’s individual progress to make sure we help prepare them for success and maintain accountability. We’ll cover specific topics such as overall progress, practice records, private lesson recommendations (if necessary), and other pertinent information related to your family.
  • Please submit your clear and detailed (bullet points, not sentences, please) Students Evaluations on the [WONDER GEN Roster 25-26] by November 14. We’ll send a reminder at the end of October.

Wow! It’s finally here. What we’ve been preparing for all summer. We’re thankful all of you are part of this journey with us and we trust you share in our eagerness to make a positive impact in the lives of the Wonder students, families, and community we seek to serve. To those who could attend, thank you for your time during the first Team Meeting and Family Orientation. We are almost done with the bulk of behind the scenes work for the first day. Thank you for your patience and for all you do. If you need something from us, please let us know, and we’ll do our best to get it to you asap. Please note, we will be unavailable on Tuesday, September 23, but will do our best to reply to messages before then. Otherwise, we will be available to answer questions on Tuesday. Below we’ve included a few highlights from the Team Meeting, points we weren’t able to cover, and preparations for the first day of Wonder.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

• Lesson Plans: Please be sure class lesson plans for the upcoming week are clear, updated, substitute-ready (meaning detailed), and submitted by the prior Tuesday. Ideally, it would be great to see everyone at least 4 weeks ahead. All materials, resources, references, songs, links, etc., shared with students must be included in lesson plan and all files added to the respective class folder. Please be sure to include any approved materials and supplies needed for the class. Please use the Google Sheets to create detailed lesson plans each week. Thank you! • Class Notes: Class Notes are like homework for the day and are due by 8pm Tuesday, the same day of class.
• Rosters: Rosters should be updated by next Wednesday
• First Names: We go by first names at Wonder, e.g. Mr. Corey, Miss Helen, etc…
• Daily Rundown: Upon your arrival, please check in and make sure you you review the Daily Rundown with announcements, a list of notes for the day, expected attendance notes, etc. Please checkout at the end of your day.
• Wonder Tee: If you do not have a Wonder Tee, please pick one up upon your arrival, and plan to wear it weekly according to the dress code.
• Assembly: Assembly is a time to focus on character, sharing, and community building. Everyone is welcome to attend Assembly (1:00pm before lunch).
• Peaceful Environment: We want to create a peaceful environment of mutual respect and thoughtfulness for all. A few highlights for staff and/or to communicate to students:
  • Review the Wonder Top 10
  • Speak kindly to and practice patience with everyone
  • Hold high expectations for self-discipline, behavior, and character
  • Be intentional about offering acknowledgement for strengths and effort (2 praises for each critic is a good rule)
  • Quietly listen when someone is speaking to the group – for all students
  • We play together or not all – for instrument students
  • Practice makes permanent and proficient, practice with purpose
  • To avoid injury on the playground, if a child is unable to get on equipment by themselves (e.g.: monkey bars), they are likely too small and can get assisted
  • Avoid embarrassing children. For example, because homeschooling allows parents to base education on individualized development rather than government-suggested benchmarks, some children are not yet fluent readers. Please avoid forcing any child to read aloud; rather ask for volunteers or ask student privately before or after class.

FIRST DAY OF WONDER

• Your Schedule: Please view the updated calendar for your class start and end times, below.
• Team Arrival: Please arrive in enough time to check in, access your Daily Rundown and badge from the welcome table, set up your room, and be ready to greet and direct your students AT THE ROOM DOOR upon their arrival.
• Class Folder: The Class Folder is a clear pocket folder and should be in your class upon your arrival. They include attendance sheets, handouts, room setup-break down, etc. After each class, be sure your Helping Hands returns your black class folder to the welcome area.
• Helping Hands (HH): Your Helping Hands are responsible for taking attendance, recording practice records, and helping you make copies, etc. It is best practice to connect with them before class, clearly communicating your needs. You may want to provide a checklist in your class folder to help make their assignment as clear as possible. Although we try to match each class with a HH who has a background in the particular discipline, it’s not always possible. HH should arrive 15 minutes BEFORE class the first week (normally 10 minutes) AND will be dismissed 5 minutes AFTER class time (or when tasks are complete). Setup Crew should be complete 15 minutes before first class start time.
• Playroom: If you are utilizing the Playroom while you’re working, please sign your child in and out (morning in Room: GYM, afternoon in Room: 212)
• Band and Orchestra: Band and Orchestra will start in the main ensemble rooms (listed on their schedules) before moving to sectionals.  After week 1, students will go directly to their sectional rooms or ensemble room, based on final placements. 
• Littles Dance: Students will remain in the main Discovery room until the Dance Guide or HH brings them to the Dance Room. 

Arrival Protocol

• • Doors open at 8:00am for all students. The first classes begin at 8:30am.
  • Student Arrival. Students will go to the Greeting Table to sign themselves in upon their arrival. 
  • Students will then report directly to their assigned room with belongings and make any preparations before class start time (set up their stand and take out their music binders and method books, etc.). 
    • First Day. Each Guide will have a sign with the section of his or her class for easy identification. Please be at your room door to direct and assist students as needed. 
  • Late Students. For the first day ONLY, students who arrive 5 minutes after class start time are marked tardy by a Helping Hands. 
  • Uniform. Wonder members proudly wear a Wonder Tee according to our dress code. 
  • Prayer. Before classes, parents/guardians and students are invited to join Guides for a prayer and blessing of students, parents, and faculty. 
  • Announcements. Announcements will begin each class. You’ll receive the daily announcements to be read throughout the day, if applicable.

• Dismissal Protocol

• • The Wonder Generations is dismissed at 5:00pm each day, with early dismissal per block period. Wonder Honor Society is from 6pm-8pm.
  • Most student’s parents/guardians will already be present throughout the day. 
  • Students who are picked up will meet their families near the Greeting Table by the first floor entrance. 
  • Students should inform the Greeter when their parents have arrived or when they are leaving.

Family Spaces: Families are welcome to stay on the premises throughout the day. If inside, families are asked to say in one of the non-enrichment classes and not roam the buildings. Parents MUST accompany unregistered children at all times.

Playroom for Families: Parents of small children may use the Playroom while waiting for their students who are participating in a class. Parents MUST accompany children in the Playroom at all times. The Playroom staff is only responsible for children of Wonder Staff or other Wonder helpers currently working. 

TEAMWORK

We strive to foster a naturally fun and collaborative learning environment. Emphasizing the growth of the individual in order to strengthen the team. This means encouraging every person to focus on improving themselves and contributing their best to the group. This is not only for grownups, but also for our students.

Online Member Dashboard: Our primary means of communicating with you will be through the Online Member Dashboard. In addition to the goals, expectations, policies on the Team Page, we ask that you look for the memo email notification, read the contents within the memos, and take appropriate action, if necessary. For the first several weeks, please expect a memo more regularly and may become less frequent as the year continues.

Google Spaces for Team Chat: A collaborative tool, offing a central place to chat, share files, assign tasks, and stay connected. We’ve created various groups for sub teams who will need to communicate within each discipline, as well as a general Wonder HSD group. To protect the privacy of all Wonder members and families, please keep Wonder communications within this platform because we do not currently offer Wonder emails. You will receive an email invite to Google Spaces in the next two days.

Chat conversations with a bunch of people can be a great way to collaborate and communicate, but they can also be nerve-wracking. Please read Wonder’s guidelines for group chat etiquette so everybody can enjoy the chat: https://old2.letswonder.org/hsd/team/#groupchat.

Welcome to Wonder! 

2024 was another wonderful year for Wonder. It still amazes us that we started from less than 30 students in our first year to over 150 students enrolled during our fifth year. We continuously overflow with gratitude and appreciation for our wonderful team. You are the true superstars who inspire the next generation to grow in their musical and artistic skills. It seems our vision and mission continue to resonate with a lot of families who also believe that in a time of much uncertainty, it is even more vital we filled our homes and communities with faith, creativity, and hope.

We have two wonderful homeschool day programs  – Wonder Generations (WGN) entering into our 6th year (Tuesdays from 8:30am-5pm) and Wonder Honor Society (WHS) entering into our 3rd year (Tuesdays from 6pm-8pm). We’re thankful you will join us on our journey and trust you share in our excitement as we seek to cultivate togetherness through the many opportunities to explore, experience, create, and share the wonders of God around us. As we’ve sought to surround ourselves with people who are a light to those around them and share a heart to contribute more to the community at large, we are pleased with the quality of guides and coaches we have been able to add to our team for the upcoming season. We have high hopes for what our students will be learning and accomplishing this year under your mentorship, instruction, and guidance.

This year’s theme is: Peace (to be in a state of wholeness or well-being) based on John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:27

And, as always, we like to keep wonder before us. Wonder encompasses both thought and action. It’s noticing the small and mighty, the insignificant and great, sounds and colors, smells and textures; it’s curiosity, creativity, and beauty. It’s to honor the Creator of creators as well as to appreciate all of creation—including us humans. Wonder is the foundation and what we hope to establish as a culture within this organization; and it’s the overarching theme we intend to keep alive year after year as it will always be woven into the fibers of who we are. We have a great task ahead of us. But, His work surrounds us everyday and we hope we can do as the Scriptures say and declare His wonders and encourage the young and the old to do the same:

COMMUNICATIONS

Online Member Dashboard: Our primary means of general communication with you and families will be through the Online Member Dashboard. In addition to announcements, goals, expectations, policies on the Team Info Page, we ask that you look for the memo email notification, read the contents within the memos, and take appropriate action, if necessary. For the first several weeks, please expect a memo more regularly and may become less frequent as the year continues.

We choose to use a memo system in this manner, because in our experience we have found that emails don’t always make the inbox or may be deleted by the recipient. This is why you will be notified via email. The content will not be included in the body of the email, but can always be accessed through the dashboard. The memo system allows all communications to be referenced later. In the case of an individualized message, a direct email is to be expected. Until we are able to get a system built for our program, this has been the most efficient and effective way to communicate for us.

We’ve created various groups for sub teams who will need to communicate within each discipline, as well as a general Wonder HSD group. Google Drive Folder: Each discipline and/or class has as a shared folder with spreadsheet, we call the Roadmap, to facilitate weekly/daily communications for rosters, lesson plans, class notes, student evaluations, and class needs you may have during the year. We check the Roadmap once a week (on Tuesday night, so any requests for the following week must be submitted by then for the following week in order for us to see them.) [WONDER PREP FOLDER LINK] .

Team Meeting: The main team meeting is the second Tuesday in September, the morning of the Family Orientation. We may also meet in December during winter break, and as needed throughout this year to discuss ways to support Wonder events and initiatives, as well as to plan events and fundraisers that will engage our entire community.

1ST TEAM MEETING

We are getting ready to start our next season of Wonder and look forward to seeing everyone at the 1st team meeting of the season. We will review the vision and expectations for the year, get to know one another, take yearbook photos, discuss the family orientation agenda, complete any department-specific work during the team breakout session, as well as offer a vital masterclass for all staff by Anna Sobotka.

The Mandatory Family Orientation is on the evening of the same day. Because the event is in the evening we know it can conflict with your schedules, but it’s important everyone attends, if possible. While families check-in, we will have a Meet & Greet time with Guides and Coaches and complete instrument checks for band and orchestra students. It is wonderful to have team members present to meet families before the first day of classes. If you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible. Thank you!

MANDATORY FAMILY ORIENTATION (WGN)

• Attendance: WGN Guides, Coaches, and Volunteers; WGN Student/Parent Members

• Parking: Please park in the southwest parking lot near the back entrance of the Community Center (west building) and enter the double doors on the second level.
• Arrival: Please expect to be present during the entire event, at a minimum the first 2 hours for music coaches and 3 hours for everyone else. If you have a child enrolled in a program, please plan to attend the entire event.

10. Lesson Plans: Please confirm if you have access to your class Drive folder and begin updating your lesson plans for the season. 13. New Team Member Bio: If you are new to Wonder or have not submitted a bio, please reply to this memo with your updated bio by September 5. Bios should be short and in first person. Don’t be afraid to add a little personality to your writing. Keep in mind, we may need to edit your submission to fit the layout. In addition please include a short one-word or two-word answer to the following questions (example shown below):
